Having fitted an Activated Carbon (AC) system some four years ago, Wessex Water has chosen the regenerative PpTek system to replace their Siloxa Engineering AC filter.
As costs for replacing the AC have continued to increase, Wessex Water decided to make the change which corresponds with a planned increase of gas production via a new anaerobic digestion process.

PpTek to fit its first filter system in Spain.

Coll Cardus Landfill, Barcelona, Spain.

PpTek has been chosen to protect engines on one of Hera’s key landfill site just outside Barcelona in Spain. Formally Hera have been using an Activated Carbon (AC) system but due to the high ongoing operational costs they are replacing the existing filter with a PpTek regenerative system.
With high contamination levels and additional VOC’s present the regenerative solution is vital to their ongoing plans to expand the landfill site and extract additional gas from the waste. PpTek are to install one of their largest filter systems a BGAKC 5000 to replace the Verdesis AC system. Hera expect to add additional PpTek filters as the biogas production increases in coming years.
Commenting on the contract John Hayward, PpTek’s Director of Chemistry, said “The gas at Coll Cardus is very aggressive and has taken a large filter system. The cost of continually changing the AC must have been very high and very disruptive to site personnel. By fitting the PpTek unit the costs have been dramatically reduced with effectively a new filter each day and the minimum of maintenance required”

Additional Office and Factory space added in Yapton by PpTek

Final work is now being completed on additional factory production, storage and office space for PpTek. This addition will double the floor area of the PpTek facility at Orchard Business Park, Yapton, West Sussex.

“Having seen a significant increase in interest and demand for our siloxane filter products from all over the world throughout 2009, we needed to add production capacity and additional test facilities. We also plan an R&D facility to continue to develop innovations in the Granulation Filter Technology used by PpTek” commented Dave Hayward, PpTek’s Technical Director.
“Although we completed a wide search of production facilities in the surrounding area, we finally managed to obtain the factory adjacent to our exiting facility which should allow us to extend with the minimum of disruption to production” he added.

PpTek is awarded its first contract in North America to supply a Siloxane Removal System.

November saw a significant number of new contracts won by PpTek to supply siloxane filter systems to companies around the world, but the latest one sees PpTek’s first unit destined for North America.

Working through its North American Representative Run Energy, PpTek successfully tendered to supply a Siloxane Filter System to the City of Calgary for an upgrade of its Bonnybrook WwTW, near Calgary. The filter will protect 3x new 1.6 mW CAT engines that will be installed at the same time as the PpTek Siloxane Filter system. Installation is due for March 2010 where PpTek will be working with AECOM, one of the worlds leading consultants in the water treatment market.

Commenting on the successful tender Bill Cowing, PpTek’s Commercial Director said “This is our first contract for North America since we launched the PpTek product into this market after its debut at the LMOP and SWANA shows earlier this year. Anglian Water to receive it's first PpTek siloxane filter system

Cambridge Waste water Tretament Works (WwTW) has been chosen by Anglian Water to be their first installation of the popular PpTek Siloxane filtration system.

Having suffered from siloxane contamination which resulted in a premature rebuild for their Combined Heat and Power (CHP) unit, Anglian Water have chosen PpTek's silooxane filter to be installed in Cambridge. The popular BGMK 300 siloxane filter, that has already been chosen for four Southern Water locations, two Severn Trent Water sites and several other WwTW's across the UK, will be installed during December 2009. The site has additionally chosen to protect the boilers from silicon dioxide contamination by specifying the larger capacity unit.

Additional Siloxane Removal System for United Utilities WwTW site

Following very successful installations at Hatton, Dundee and Davyhulme, Manchester, Waste water Treatment Works (WwTW), United Utilities have again chosen PpTek to supply a further Siloxane filter system to Lancaster WwTW.

PpTek will be working with GCA, one of the leading industry major contract partnerships who will install the siloxane filter. The siloxane filter will protect an additional Jenbacher CHP unit replacing a small existing MAN installation. Siloxane filtration will be part of a large upgrade to the Lancaster site which will extend it's BioGas production via new Anaerobic Digesters. The siloxane filter will protect the existing CHP unit which has also been supplied by Clarke Energy, as well as the on site boilers.

PpTek showcases Siloxane removal systems at EBEC 09

PpTek have both exhibited and presented a technical paper on Siloxane removal systems at the European Biofuels Exhibition and Conference (EBEC 09) in the Stoneliegh Exhibition Centre in Staffordshire, England.

Following successful exhibitions earlier in 2009 at the Landfill Outreach Methane Program (LMOP) and the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) in the USA, PpTek attended the EBEC show for the first time. Along with a significant presence from the UK market there was a large contingent of attendees from Europe and other parts of the world.

Additional Siloxane filtration systems for Southern Water

Following two similar successful installations at Gravesend and Fullerton Waste water Treatment Works, Southern Water have ordered two additional BGMK siloxane filtration systems to protect their new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) installation.

Partnering once again with Cogenco, a major European CHP integrator, PpTek has been chosen to supply their largest version of the manually regenerated Siloxane filter system(BGMK) to two sites close to Snodland in Kent, UK.

Siloxane Filter Systems bound for Helsinki

PpTek, partnering with Sarlin OY. an important integrator operating in Finland, has been chosen to supply two siloxanes filtration systems for Ämmässuo Landfill site, Helsinki, Finland.

Gas flow for the project will be up to 8,000 m3/hr servicing up to four Combined Heat and Power (CHP) units. The engines and siloxane filtration systems will be housed in a showcase glass sided building which is expected to attract many visitors to the Ämmässuo site.

The installation will be PpTek's first site for the upgraded MK 4 version of its popular BGAK range of automatic siloxane filters, and will also be the largest installation world wide for PpTek.

PpTek team up with major flare manufacturer to offer low cost mini flare

Whilst most customers installing the BGAK, auto regeneration version of the PpTek siloxane filters system, use the condensing chimney to remove the waste siloxanes and VOC’s, several customers who have very sensitive sites have requested that the regeneration air is burned in a flare.
The normal flares found on landfill sites have a minimum consumption of ~ 600 m3/hr to reach the required temperatures of 1000 Deg C and thus are wasteful of gas that could earn valuable revenue.
Seeing this requirement, PpTek has therefore teamed up with a leading UK flare manufacturer to design and develop a Vent Air Burner (VAB) which acts in the same way as a fully compliant flare, but is low cost and only consumes ~ 30 - 50 m3/hr of gas whilst in regeneration mode of the filters ( 4 hours per day).

David Hayward, Technical Director of PpTek Ltd commented “Although it is by no means necessary for all site and customers, there are some customers with sensitive sites that will require the safeguards a VAB can offer. The VAB is fully controlled by our standard control panel and therefore is totally self contained on site”

A second Siloxane filter to be made for CLP Envirogas

After a successful installation of a PpTek filter at their Skellbrooke Landfill site, CLP Envirogas has recently ordered a second siloxane filter system to protect Engines at their Achencarroch Landfill site in Scotland.

The installation will be capable of cleaning the gas flow of up to 3500 m3/hr and will be replacing an Activated Carbon filter previously used on site.

The fitment of the PpTek siloxane filter will not only give increased protection over the Activated Carbon (AC) system but will significantly reduce the ongoing operational costs of protection for CLPE.

Bill Cowing, PpTek’s Commercial Director commented “We are delighted that an existing customer, having now proven our technology one site, has now chosen to add additional protection at another site and replace their AC filter with ours.
This is a trend we are seeing more and more and we predict that approximately 40% of our Landfill filters, to be fitted in the coming year, will be replacing existing AC installations”.

Responding to the customer demand PpTek have teamed up with an experienced installation company, who have previous experience with PpTek filter installations.

Severn Trent Water place order for second site at Coalport

Having finalised plans to replace an existing CHP at Coalport STW, Telford, UK, Severn Trent Water has chosen PpTek to provide a siloxane removal system to protect the new CHP installation and boilers.

Working closely with the main contractor, May Gurney, PpTek will supply a BGMK 150 manual regeneration filter to protect the new installation from siloxane damage.

United Utilities choose PpTek

An upgrade of the STW site at Davyhulme, Manchester has prompted United Utilities to order an initial filter system from PpTek. Having replaced the old CHP’s for up to date Jenbacher units, it was decided to protect the tehir investment against Siloxane damage which could effect the efficient running of the installation.

An initial filter system will be fitted in the existing layout, with a further system being fitted during a digester upgrade which will provide additional BioGas.
Both filter systems will be located adjacent to the new CHP building when the scheme is fully completed, which will also allow protection of the onsite boilers.

eco2 choose PpTek

eco2, an independent Landfill gas - energy operator, has chosen PpTek to install a filter system to clean the BioGas at their Lyme and Wood Pit Landfill site at Haydock, Lancashire, UK.

The filter chosen is the BGAK 4000 which will be online in mid summer to clean the gas to the current three Caterpillar engines. Provision has also been made in site planning for a second filter to clean the future doubling of gas output in the next few years.

“This site will have the biggest single capacity filter system to date fitted from PpTek, and we are confident that it will make a significant contribution to the efficient running of the engines on site. A close working relationship between eco2, Renewable Power Systems, eco2’s engineering consultants, and ourselves has provided an easy upgrade path to add an additional filter system when the gas flow increases” said Bill Cowing, PpTek’s commercial Director.

SEEDA award for PpTek

Having successfully completed initial research and development into the viability of extending their regenerative filter technology to removal of H2S (Hydrogen Sulphide), PpTek have been awarded a grant through the SEEDA organisation to continue to develop the product through to a production unit.

PpTek will be working with Sussex University who are leaders in the relevant field and will allocate significant resources to complete the work during the summer of 2008.

John Hayward, PpTek’s Director of Chemistry said “Our customers have been asking us for some time to develop a solution that can be regenerated on site in a similar way to our Siloxane filters. The cost of raw material used in current H2S removal solutions has risen to the extent that most customers are spending £50,000 or more a year. First indications indicate the running cost of our solution would be a fraction of that cost. This grant gives us the opportunity to hire more R&D resources to complete the initial work we have already started some time ago”.

PpTek to protect engines at Avondale

The increase in gas production from the Avondale Landfill has prompted installation of two identical filters to be designed into the sites gas conditioning plant. To ensure adequate capacity the two filters were fitted in parallel each cleaning up to 2000 m3/hr of BioGas.
It is also planned to retro-fit more cleaning capacity in the future for the existing engines.

Southern Water choose PpTek filter for two additional CHP sites.

Southern Water have today increased the number of PpTek filters fitted to their new CHP installations in the South East of England.

Working in conjunction with Finning Ltd, UK’s CAT dealer who will supply the CHP units, PpTek has been chosen again to protect the CHP installation at two additional sites at Southampton and Havant.
This brings the total number of installations of PpTek filters for Southern Water, to five sites across Southern England.

Commenting on the orders, PpTek’s Commercial Director Bill Cowing, said “ We are delighted to be working again with Finning on these important sites and extending our relationship with Southern Water”.

PpTek will be supplying the newly announced BGAK 1200 and BGAK 600 which will be used due to their reduced footprint and will be installed during the Autumn.

EnviroBusiness, an organisation linked with SEEDA UK and UK Trade and Investment, which is set up to promote new innovative businesses in the South of England in the Environmental market place, has chosen PpTek Ltd to feature in it’s forthcoming promotional DVD.

Showcasing a small number of companies that have innovative solutions to problems effecting the environment, PpTek was chosen due to it’s significant advances in reducing siloxanes in BioGas giving operators the potential to deliver up to 25% more green energy from the same gas flow.

The DVD was shot at Severn Trent’s Stoke Bardolph STW at Nottingham UK and features Bill Cowing, PpTek’s Commercial Director and Tom Fourcade EnviroBusiness’s CEO, discussing siloxane problems and the PpTek solution.

The DVD is expected to be finalised during the Autumn and will be used to showcase products, via Commercial Attaches at British Embassies around the world, to potential new customers.

PpTek announce addition to BGMK range

Following rapidly behind the announcement for a decrease in footprint of the BGAK 1200 siloxane filter, PpTek today announce an addition to their range of manual regeneration filters.

The BGMK 50 will be available for small low gas flow sites typically with engines around 1000 cc powering small CHP installations.

PpTek announce a reduced footprint

PpTek has today announced a significant reduction in footprint for filters with gas flows up to 1200 m3/hr.

Following the introduction of the market leading BGAK 600, PpTek have redesigned the BGAK 1200 filter to have the same footprint and size.
Using advancements in housing designs and media density, PpTek has been able to dramatically increase the capacity of its 1200 filter.

Simultaneously PpTek has introduced an additional configuration feature that allows customers to specify the regeneration equipment placement allowing for a “square” footprint of approximately 3.4m wide x 3.7m long as apposed to the standard 1.85m wide x 5.6m long, at no additional cost. They will also announce later this year an “Ecco Pack” that reduces the cost of regeneration power by 50%.

David Hayward, Director of Product Development, said “Customers have been very impressed with the small footprint of the BGAK 600 range of filters, but were seeking greater gas throughput to cope with multiple engines on Landfill and Sewage treatment sites. Scottish Water chose PpTek to protect new CHP installation

Today Scottish Water in conjunction with United Utilities Operational Services Scotland (UUOS) have chosen a BGAK600 PpTek filter to protect their new Combined Heat and Power (CHP) installation at Hatton STW, near Dundee Scotland.

PpTek will be working with Cogenco Ltd who will be supplying and operating the CHP unit to achieve a successfull installation during the autumn of 2007.

Welsh Water has today chosen PpTek to partner with in removing Siloxanes from their BioGas at the Swansea Bay Sewage Treatment Works (STW).
A new CHP installation will be completed during the summer of 2007 and, partnering with EnerG, a leading CHP supplier in Europe, PpTek will supply the successful BGAK 6000.

Swansea Bay STW occupies a position on the Southern Welsh shore line and has been designed to blend in with the surrounding seascape. The CHP and filtration system will be surrounded by a landscaped area that will blend in with the overall architecture.

Marcopolo choose PpTek

Another Export order has today been signed by PpTek to supply a siloxane removal system to a leader in the Italian landfill market.

Marcopolo have chosen PpTek’s new BGAK 600 filtration system to clean their BioGas at the Ferrara Landfill near Bologna, Italy.

Siloxanes and Chlorines are a real problem on the site which has a major effect on service intervals and costs of the Gas - Energy units installed on site.

Southern Water choose PpTek

Southern Water UK have recently embarked on a major Combined Heat and Power (CHP) installation program across the South East of England. Included in the new installations will be siloxane filtration systems from PpTek.

Work started during 2006 to plan the multiple CHP installations with two of the UK’s largest CHP suppliers Finning and CoGenco. PpTek have worked closely with both companies to maximise the available space available and have specified the new BGAK 600 filters for the larger site.

“Southern Waters program of CHP installations are all planned to include siloxane filtration and we are delighted that they have chosen PpTek as their partners in siloxane clean up”, said David Hayward Technical Director of Operations.
He added “The program is planned to unfold during 2007 and will be a major path to Southern Water producing a significant amount of additional green electricity from BioGas” .

New addition to PpTek range

A new addition to the PpTek range of BioGas AutoKleen filters was today announced to the market. Serving both the Sewage Treatment and Landfill markets, this addition to the popular BGAK range is targeted at the sites producing approximately 1mW of electrical power.

The new addition to the range has a significantly smaller footprint than the larger capacity BGAK 1200 - 3000. Changes in the design have allowed two shaped versions to be offered which will facilitate the filters use in different spaces within customers sites.
A new control panel has also been added which splits the necessary elements of the system into three compartments, Control and Power / PLC / Pneumatics.
Additionally remote monitoring and “text alert” features have been added to options available for customers on all filters within the range.

PpTek to supply equipment to Wessex Water

Following the launch of the new BGAK 600 filter, PpTek has received a contract from Wessex Water to supply a filter to remove Siloxanes from their Sewage Treatment Works (STW) at Poole, Dorset, UK.
Siloxanes have always been a costly issue on this site, forcing Wessex Water to seek a gas clean up solution.

Wessex Water already has a PpTek filter installed at one of their other sites and has made the decision to fit the unit after a successful period of running a BGMK at Trowbridge, UK.

Severn Trent Water choose PpTek

Severn Trent Water (STW) has chosen PpTek to install a filter to clean the BioGas at one of their largest sites near Nottingham.

The water treatment works has recently undergone a major overhaul of its facility which included replacing the old CHP engines with two new 1.15 mW GE Jenbacher units. Due to historical problems with Siloxane contamination of the BioGas STW included gas filtration in their refurbishment plans.

During planning PpTek were able to configure their BioGas Autokleen (BGAK) filter to be able to protect not only the new CHP engines but also the boilers used to supply the heat for the anaerobic digestion process which produces the BioGas.

PpTek move to new factory

PpTek have moved to a new factory in a nearby business park at Yapton, West Sussex.

PpTek have recently moved into a new 2000 sq ft factory to cope with the increasing order flow and to be able to keep up with demand for its filters.
Moving to the nearby village of Yapton from its base in Middleton -on Sea will allow PpTek to execute assembly and test procedures, on its filters, prior to delivery and installation at customers sites.

PpTek’s Director of Engineering, David Hayward, commented : “Our business plan, during 2006, has always been to find a suitable factory to allow us to perform assembly and test functions on the filters. We have been very fortunate to find an ideal facility so close to our previous base at Middleton. Our ability for throughput, in the new facility, should match demand for the next 2-3 years”

PpTek UK Ltd has been chosen to supply Siloxane Removal System to Europe’s largest Water Treatment Plant in Europe at Harnaschpolder, Wippolderlaan , The Haag, Holland.

The treatment plant is being built, to serve all the water treatment for the area of The Haag, in Holland, by the BAHR consortium of private and public money. Currently the treatment is supplied by several plants within the area and will allow consolidation to be achieved.
Completion of the plant will be during late 2006 with a gradual ramp in demand during 2007 - 2008.

PpTek Siloxane removal system will protect 3 x 1.5 mw GE Jenbacher Engines and other equipment that is currently being installed at Harnaschpolder plant.

Trials completed - Manual and Auto Regeneration Units

The first BGMK (BioGas manual Kleen filter unit) and BGAK (BioGas auto Kleen filter) have now completed successful trials at a Sewage Treatment Works (STW) in Trowbridge, UK and a Landfill (LF) site in Humberside E.Yorkshire.

During the trials both gas, plug and oil data were collected and analysed independently. The results show that both types of siloxane filter units cleaned the BioGas of Siloxane contaminates. Both sites showed a level of well below 8 mg/m3 of contamination after treatment, and well within major engine manufacturers contaminated BioGas guidelines.

Both units performed to design parameters and beyond. We now have a substantial order book to full fill for customers in the UK, Europe and USA. BGMK fitted to Sewage treatment works at Trowbridge

The first BGMK (manual klean filter unit) has been installed at a Wessex Water Sewage Treatment Works (STW) in Trowbridge, UK.

The unit was installed to clean STW BioGas for a small single engine. The filter contains sufficient media to last 3 months before needing to be manually regenerated on site. The filter contains the same media that is used in the automatic regeneration installed at the landfill site in Humberside, UK.

A follow up installation of a BGAK filter has been made on a Waste Recycling Group (WRG) Landfill site in the UK.

The unit has performed to the PpTek specification removing the Siloxanes in the Landfill gas to less than 1mg/m3, with the media successfully regenerated automatically on site. The pressure drop across the filter exceeded design parameters dropping only 0.7mb.

David Hayward, Director of Product Development, commented:- “Our follow up installation at the WRG landfill site in Humberside, UK was completed smoothly. The 1.15M Jenbacher engine, that it is feeding treated gas to, is running well and we hope to see confirming results from the site soon”.

PpTek at SWANA conference in San Diego

The Product Development department of PpTek presented a technical paper at the SWANA conference in San Diego, California, USA on March 10th 2005.

The presentation, given by John Hayward, was a great success and prompted many questions during the following session and in the associated exhibition.

John Hayward commented “The reaction, and following comments we received, indicates that PpTek has a real solution for operators which is now ready to be delivered in production”

The patented regenerative solution was hailed as an important innovation in solving the Siloxane contamination issue in the landfill and sewage treatment industry.

The first production BioGas AK (BGAK) has now successfully been installed on a Landfill site in the UK. The Waste Recycling Group (WRG) site at Rigby, near Wigan, hosts the first unit.

The unit has performed to the PpTek specification removing the Siloxanes in the Landfill gas to less than 1mg/m3, with the media successfully regenerated automatically on site. The pressure drop across the filter exceeded design parameters dropping only 0.7mb.
